Toast is a beast of a working dog, and an excellent example of everything a malinois should be. He is a substantial 90 pound male from frozen semen of the great producer D’Only des Ombres Valeureux. Toast bites like an alligator, and has fast entries, and has been a naturally strong gripping dog since he was a baby. He sacrifices no athleticism or stamina, and despite his size, he can do the ringsport jumps at max, and can easily perform a full MR3 routine in the morning and hit every phase of IGP in the same day. He is a freak of nature.

Toast is exceptionally social with people and dogs, and can live easily with intact males, puppies, and small dogs. He is the unicorn dog that everybody wants, that can be pet by a child in Lowes, and then go muzzle fight the bad guy without missing a beat. Toast is also not a dog for beginners or the weak of heart. He has strong possession, an overwhelming drive for bite work, and a breed appropriate level of aggression that he can channel very well into the work. He is physically insensitive, while retaining some good social sensitivity toward his handler. Toast has high food drive and very high toy drive. Keeping brakes installed on Toast is a never ending project.

Toast is also a classic example of some key things we hold true:

  • A genuinely strong dog should not need built, and built, and built, and built. Dogs who need to be built in the bite work continually over their whole career should be carefully evaluated when considering breeding options. It is sometimes a symptom of a dog trained unfairly or with a heavy hand, but is often actually a dog who can’t hold up to the rigors of the sport unless they are constantly built up.
  • Slow to mature does not mean that a young dog should be nervous or have zero drive. A classic slow to mature dog like Toast starts off as a nice puppy, but continues to grow and get stronger and stronger through their early years, even in the absence of drive building.
  • Strong environmental stability and sociability does not make a dog a candidate to be a pet or a service dog. Those are small factors in the overall picture. The malinois is a working animal, and should not be watered down because somebody wants a calmer house dog off switch.
